Needs Assessment

Student Assessment
Student Self-evaluation
Objective Test

Needs assessments give the teacher information that helps her present knowledge to students at their level of understanding. In this way, students will feel acknowledged for what they do know and supported to meet new challenges in learning.

The beginning of the school year and the beginning of a new unit are two appropriate times to carry out needs assessment in the classroom. There are many ways to approach this process: a class discussion, a written questionnaire, an in class exercise, a short essay response, a non graded objective test from an earlier grade level. The questionnaire below is a Needs Assessment that I would give to eighth graders to fill out in the classroom for assessing their familiarity with Art at the beginning of a year long Foundations of Art Course. I would also consider keeping the filled out questionnaires until the end of the school year, have students fill out the same questionnaire at the end of the year, and have them compare the two. Their answers would reflect their growth and achievements over the year.

Art Survey

This is a questionnaire designed to help me find out about your knowledge and experience of art so that together we can create the best possible class experience. You may even learn new things about yourself in the process! Answer every question as clearly as you can. Remember that this is not a graded test, but it is an important step to getting off to a good start.

How often have you used the following art materials and art techniques?

Fill in the blank to the right of each item with the number that is most accurate for you.

0 = never, 1 = rarely, 2 = sometimes, 3 = often, 4 = one of my favorites!
