Welcome to my galley. Here you will find a small sample of my work as an artist. I have experience in a variety of media: painting, drawing, ceramics, textiles, and fine metals. My BFA is in painting and this is what I currently enjoy doing the most. The three pieces 'The Hobo', 'The Teacher', and 'The Jockey' are from my BFA show in June, 2001 at Maharishi University of Management. I have included below the artist statement I used for that show and this will tell you about the process I went through when creating those particular pieces. The Hobo Like the images we find in clouds and the faces we see in rocks or in the knot of an old tree, my characters emerge from the canvas with the subtlest of expression. I begin each painting with a few quick brush strokes and with the absence of intention. Allowing my brush to move freely, I build each stroke and wash. I rotate the canvas, glance over the whole, and if nothing appears I continue repeating the same process. Sometimes I'll just wipe out the entire canvas and start over again, only this time I have a stain that can be scratched into, rubbed away, or be used as an undercoat for a new beginning. But before long with just a few marks I can start to see the hem of a skirt, the brim of a hat, or the mustache of a fat man. It is here that my imagination takes the stage. The curtain is drawn and my characters make their appearance. Creativity is the play. At this point having three or four canvases going at once, my hand cannot apply the paint quick enough. I feel charged as the life of each almost cast like member unfolds before me. The hem of the skirt has now been turned upside down to form the quills of a woman's headdress. The brim of the hat overshadows a mysterious hobo. And the fat guy with the mustache becomes a cellist in a tux on his way to the concert. Every character now has a life and a story within an infinite play in the world of my imagination. This is the tale of my painting.
