Student Self-evaluation

Student Assessment
Objective Test

The Self-assessment below was created for eighth grade students as a way for them to critique their own finished artwork. The project is to paint a still life with tempera paints in a Pointillist style. The students are introduced to Pointillism with a presentation on Seurat and his painting, "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte". Specific guidelines for the project are written out on the blackboard. In a few days time, most students will be done painting and this handout is given to each student to be filled out in class. There are subjective and objective questions in the handout. The subjective questions give students the opportunity to reflect on the decisions they made in the process of painting. The objective questions demonstrate back to the student how well they understand the goals of the assignment. Students are asked to turn in the completed handout. Ideally, I would take a couple of minutes to go over the form with each student.

Sample Self-evaluation Forms

The blue evaluation form is general enough in content that it may be used as an self-assessment tool for different projects at different grade levels. It may also be used by students as a guide of what to look for in each other's work during group critiques.

This self-evaluation form is specific to ceramics, but may be used for different ceramic projects.
