Welcome to my portfolio!

This portfolio will guide you through my experiences and growth from a student teacher to a teacher.I love the line my 4th grade cooperating teacher would say: "I am still learning and adjusting my teaching daily after 15 years in the classroom."

What she said was wonderfully encouraging to me because during times when a lesson was challenging, those words would ring through my head and reassure me that there is no such thing as perfection every minute of every day in this field.

Another colleague from the second grade said that during days when things don't work out in the classroom, the best she can do is always re-examine the situation and ask herself how can she do things better tomorrow or the next time. I think that the best thing a teacher can do is to assess herself daily and find out ways that she/he can improve her teaching for the next time.

A personal goal which I have therefore drawn from my own teacher education and student teaching experience centers around the need, my need, to consider the importance of daily reflection. This comes from the center of my personal being and is in itself a reflection of who I am ; that personally and professionally I consider my life's work and goals in teaching as an ongoing process where strategies, curriculum, lesson plans, perspectives and understandings can change and may reflect changes in the evolving school community, changes in families and their structures and, in fact, changes in the world. Because I feel committed to bringing forth the best that I can for each child, I must be open and ready to grow myself!

Other specific goals for my teaching are highlighted in the Approach to Education, where the ideals which I am working toward as a teacher with enthusiasm and devotion to the profession are described.

The Classroom Management Plan highlights my objective in fostering independent thinkers as well as self-disciplined students.

The Curriculum Samples page has direct access to my unit plan and three lesson plans. On the curriculum samples page you will also find eight additional links to assessments, rubrics, worksheets and student work from my unit.

The Iowa Professional Teaching Standards page shows where the eight standards can be found in my portfolio.

My Professional development page can be accessed by a link in my Evaluations page.

Throughout my student teaching experience, I have developed an interest in pursuing a Montessori Elementary Diploma. I plan to begin the first half of the training in July, 2005. This will play a major role to further develop my skills at managing differentiation. It will expose me to additional teaching and learning philosophies and research, all which will help establish me more as a highly qualified teacher. It will also enhance the learning in my classroom because I will have the knowledge to bring forth optimum experiences for my students.
